Brussels: A trip to Belgium would not be complete without spending time in the country's capital Brussels. Brussels is without a doubt a city of culture and artistry. Brussels is divided into two main parts, the Lower and Upper Towns. The Lower town is the older part of the city and is built around the city's medieval heritage. The Upper town is more modern and is the home of Brussels French speaking elite with museums and the major shopping areas. The best time to visit Brussels is at the weekend because hotels tend to drop their prices from Friday to Sunday. There is plenty to see and do in this city and with its stunning architecture Brussels is a definite must see. The Cathedrale des Saints Michel and Gudule is a perfect example of this. This twin towered Cathedral was named after Brussels patron saints. Its building began in 1226 and took over 300 years to built and its architecture is a blend of styles from Romanesque, Gothic right up to Renaissance architecture. The Grand Place is the city's central square and dates from the 12th century it is surrounded by a plethora of cafes and restaurants and is the perfect place to idle away a lazy afternoon. Brussels is also the seat of the European parliament since 1958 and has become the political centre of Europe.
